EU and Canada partner to tackle climate risks through Destination Earth
On Friday 30 October, the European Commission and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) stepped up cooperation on Earth-system intelligence under Destination Earth (DestinE) - the EU flagship initiative to create a digital twin of our planet.
By advancing collaboration on cutting-edge, AI-enabled climate modelling, the European Union and Canada are reaffirming their shared commitment to stronger climate resilience and adaptation, enhanced wildfire preparedness, and more effective responses to the growing climate challenges affecting the Arctic, the Caribbean and regions across the globe.
The Administrative Arrangement signed today in Montreal at the EU-Canada Summit marks a new milestone in the EU-Canada digital and artificial intelligence partnership launched in December 2025 under the EU-Canada Digital Partnership. The Arrangement allows for concrete action with real-world impact. By pooling expertise, data and high-resolution modelling capabilities, the EU and Canada aim to transform climate risk assessment and to fast-track breakthrough tools for climate adaptation through DestinE.
DestinE is developing a highly accurate digital replica of the Earth system to better simulate, anticipate and respond to environmental challenges. Combined with Canadian data and scientific expertise, DestinE’s cutting-edge capabilities will help create innovative public-interest solutions. The cooperation will turn complex Earth-system data into actionable intelligence, helping civil protection authorities, industry, regional planners and policymakers stay ahead of a rapidly changing climate.
Joint operational priorities will focus on areas where the climate crisis is hitting hardest and where better intelligence can save lives, protect communities and reduce long-term costs:
Wildfire behaviour and prediction: advancing AI algorithms to anticipate fire ignition, spread patterns and atmospheric feedback loops, giving first responders crucial lead time.
Arctic climate dynamics: strengthening simulations of sea ice decline, permafrost thaw, polar vortices and stratospheric shifts. As changes in the Arctic increasingly drive weather disruption across the Northern Hemisphere, sharper intelligence will help protect vulnerable communities while lowering adaptation costs across Canada and Northern Europe.
Regional resilience beyond borders: supporting high-resolution forecasting and climate risk modelling for vulnerable regions, including through collaborative modelling support for the Caribbean.
This strengthened cooperation reflects the EU and Canada’s shared commitment to innovation, sustainability and human-centric technology, helping them to lead the way in harnessing digital innovation for the public good.
EU Canadian collaboration expands on key digital topics
During the EU-Canada Summit, Canada has been welcomed as a member of the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC), linking Europe’s and Canada’s supercomputing, quantum computing and AI computing ecosystems, including Europe’s AI Factories.
Discussions also took place on intensifying joint work on Arctic connectivity and on working on the technical interoperability of EU and Canadian digital identities and credentials.
