EDIC for Agri-Food

EDIC for Agri-Food launches to support digital innovation across Europe’s food and agriculture sector
The European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for Agri-Food (EDIC for Agri-Food) has officially been established today with its seat in Paris with a launch event convened by Ms Annie Genevard, French Minister of Agriculture, Agri-Food and Food Sovereignty member countries, the Commission and stakeholders from across the agri-food supply chain.
The EDIC for Agri-Food brings together Austria, Croatia, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and the region of Flanders alongside observers Germany, Ireland, Latvia and Spain.
One of the first missions of the EDIC for Agri-Food will be to develop a common Digital Farm ID. As farms and other agricultural actors adopt data-driven digital innovations, the EDIC for Agri-Food will promote common European approaches and interoperable solutions, helping to build a more resilient and digitally sovereign European agri-food sector. The Digital Farm ID fits into the wider work on the European Digital Identity (EUDI) ecosystem. Where relevant, the Digital Farm ID will align with the technical solutions developed within the EUDI Wallet ecosystem, including the European Business Wallets.
Designed as a federated, interoperable identifier for farms across the EU, the Digital Farm ID promises to offer a European identifier for farms across the EU, while interconnecting with existing national systems. By reducing reporting efforts, easing administrative burdens, and improving transparency and efficiency across the agri-food chain, the Digital Farm ID could also facilitate secure access to high-quality data for AI-based services, empowering farmers and agri-food businesses to benefit from digital solutions.
Another mission of the EDIC for Agri-Food also is to explore how AI can support the agriculture sector in line with the EU Apply AI strategy. AI-based risk management, product traceability and carbon certification mechanisms will be some of the services explored through multi-country deployment actions set to be supported.
This work is targeted to deliver digital innovation that eases administrative burdens for farmers, increases productivity and reduces overall production costs.
The Commission welcomes other Member States wishing to join the EDIC for Agri-Food in accordance with the rights and obligations as set out in its statutes.
European Digital Infrastructure Consortia (EDICs) are international organisations established under the Digital Decade Policy Programme. They enable Member States to jointly develop, operate and invest into cross border digital infrastructures under shared governance and a long-term vision. Several EDICs are already active in areas such as language technologies, cybersecurity skills, local digital twins for cities, digital commons and blockchain infrastructures.
The Commission Implementing Decision establishing the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for Agri-Food (EDIC for Agri-Food) was adopted on 8 September 2026.
